Completed Animation
Cel
|
Our gallery has the most comprehensive gathering of animation art in the world, including
completed animation cel collections containing individual cels. Cel is shorthand for the word celluloid or cellulose. Completed animation cels can have up to five layers of cels per scene. Cels are sheets of clear plastic with character paintings, which are then placed over animation backgrounds. The whole works is then photographed together in a series to create an illusion of animation.
The dark outlines of each of each character are usually inked or xeroxed on the top of the plastic and then colors are hand-painted on the
cel's back so there are no visible brush strokes. There are different types of cels, typically
they're made of nitrate and acetate. During the early 1900s animation artists completed animation cels using the cellulose nitrate type. Today you will see that acetate cels are used because
acetate's a more stable material.
